Getting the most Value out of PeriopSim

Apr 28, 2021 11:00:00 AM / by Jumana Mascati

How do we know we are getting value from PeriopSim?  Where do we find this information? In today’s blog, I will cover the Dashboard Metrics and Subscription Stats in the PeriopSim Experience Portal to understand the PeriopSim value model.

PeriopSim is our Immersive and Virtual Training and Assessment Platform designed specifically for the surgical team.  To understand value, we need to understand the concept that a 1-hour long surgical procedure takes 10 minutes in PeriopSim.

Learners gain more confidence with repeated simulations, where simulation time for each learner can be tracked through reports in the user experience portal and converted to virtual hours accordingly, whereby 10 minutes of simulation learning is equal to 60 minutes of real time or virtual learning (competencies focused on are Steps of a Procedure, Anticipation and Counting). This application provides condensed learning, saving learners and ultimately Educators, significant time.   For example one of our health system customers have said,
"Our experience is that 2.1 hours of iPad study replaced 7.5 hours of classroom study (per student) and saved 10 hours of instructor and equipment time (for one cohort)."  This particular health system, at this time, wasn't looking to save overall curriculum time, but rather to increase the value with the training time scheduled with the learners.

Educators are able to access quantified assessments of the learners participating in these virtual procedures and save valuable time running simulations, evaluating individual learners, and grading.  How do we quantify this into actual value data?

On the Dashboard, we have a Subscription Stats panel.  The total number of simulation hours completed are tracked.  For example in the image below we have 107 simulation hours.  To convert these into real-time hours (Productivity Increase) we would multiply the number of simulation hours by a factor of 6 because PeriopSim simulations take a one-hour-long procedure and deliver the experience in just ten minutes.

So in the example in the picture below, real life productivity is 6 multiplied by 107 hours which is: 640 hours.

On average a preceptor is paid $30 an hour.  If you multiply the real life Productivity Increase 640 hours by $30 an hour you will get a Total Value Received of: $19,213.00.

Seeing this Productivity Increase and Total Value Received leads to results on the Dashboard showing quantifiable competence for learners on procedures for Anticipation, Steps of a Procedure and Instrumentation.  An ‘A’ grade indicates a learner is already anticipating and passing instruments quicker than the allotted time. A ‘B’ grade indicates on time passing as shown in the dashboard results below:

Using traditional learning, how do you as an Educator, know that the learners are quantifiably competent with Anticipation, Steps of a Procedure, and Instrumentation.

What is the cost to you as an Educator to do this level of assessment and training without PeriopSim?  Note with the example above, a total number of 1110 Simulations across 22 out of 36 Simulation Experiences.

This data is useful for helping you present to your Management how much value was added to your learning program while using PeriopSim.  It is also useful in building a strong business case for your subscription renewal when planning your budgets for the year.  When working through the business case consider if your aim is to save training time or increase the training value with the time you have with your learners.  PeriopSim can be used to do both.
